The Facts There are two shelters in Fredericton, one for men and one for women. The men's shelter at 65 Brunswick Street, and Grace House for women. The first shelter was established in 1983. It was supposed to be a temporary shelter. All clients are received free of charge. If they receive income while at the shelter, a fee is charged that is prorated according to their income. The shelters operate 23 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a 10 p.m. curfew in the summer, and an 8 p.m. curfew in the winter. What Does it Cost to Run the Shelters? Our annual budget is close to $365,000 a year. We get $60,000 a year from the province. We get approximately $40,000 from paying guests. We get an annual donation from the United Way. We must RAISE over $200,000 from the community every year. Who Stays Here? We provide about 14,000 bed nights a year for homeless men and women. The shelters are open 23 hours a day, 7 days a week. The people we serve are people who don't choose to be on the street, but are unable to provide a bed for themselves. Our average guest is poorly educated, often has an addiction or long-term mental illness, and doesn't have a support network. It is estimated that less than 10% are employable for steady work. |
